Polignano a Mare<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Knowledge &amp; info about Polignano a Mare for your day trip<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Polignano a Mare is known for its <strong>spectacular location<\/strong> on the cliffs of Puglia. The houses are perched right on the cliff edge \u2013 wow!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The town is one of the most touristy in Puglia. You really need to refer to <strong>mass tourism<\/strong> here, especially in the summer months. Polignano\u2019s tiny old town was still incredibly busy when we visited during the off season.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are countless <strong>grottos<\/strong> around the cliffs in front of Polignano. If you stay longer, you can explore them on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/s?partner_id=P9YUZII&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;placement=content-middle&amp;q=Polignano+a+Mare&amp;et=231812&amp;lc=96415\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">boat tour<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We recommend around <strong>2 to 3 hours<\/strong> for a visit to the old town and the main attractions and sights \u2013 longer if you also would like to have a bite to eat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is <strong>paid parking<\/strong> outside the old town. We parked our car at Parcheggio San Francesco e Sant\u2019Oronzo. It is less than a 10-minute walk to the old town from there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel Guide Polignano a Mare: Sights &amp; tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lama Monachile Beach<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most famous photo motifs in Polignano a Mare is the town\u2019s <strong>legendary beach<\/strong>, Lama Monachile. The small, picturesque bay is located right down from the old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can enjoy the <strong>fairy-tale view<\/strong> of Lama Monachile from several viewpoints. These two are the most well-known:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From the bridge called <strong>Ponte Borbonico<\/strong>, which you more or less automatically come to on the way towards the old town.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From the viewing platform called \u201cBelvedere su Lama Monachile\u201d (located inside the old town).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you can also stroll down to the beach and <strong>go swimming<\/strong> if you wish. A pebble beach awaits you here with beautiful clear water. Polignano a Mare\u2019s old town is located on a peninsula and is closed to traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is best to simply let yourself drift \u2013 the old town is not very big, so quick to explore. Before long you will probably end up in the spacious main square of Polignano, the <strong>Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II<\/strong>.&nbsp;There are not only several caf\u00e9s and restaurants nestled here, but also two main attractions of Polignano a Mare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One is the <strong>main church<\/strong> of Polignano a Mare, the Chiesa Matrice di Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo. It is certainly not the most impressive in Puglia, but if you are already there then take a look inside. The second is also located in the main square, the <strong>Palazzo dell\u2019Orologio<\/strong>&nbsp;with its pretty clock tower. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will notice rather quickly that Polignano\u2019s old town is <strong>incredibly touristy<\/strong>. Souvenir shops are lined up one after the other and it is incredibly crowded here, especially in the main season. You should not miss the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Belvedere su Lama Monachile:&nbsp;<\/strong>The best view of the Lama Monachile (see above).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Belvedere Terrazza Santo Stefano:&nbsp;<\/strong>This viewpoint is located in the very north of the old town. You get a great view of the coast from here.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grotta dell\u2019Arcivescovado:<\/strong>&nbsp;Located north of Belvedere Terrazza Santo Stefano and offers a similar view of the cliffs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scogliera del Lungomare Modugno:<\/strong>&nbsp;The only viewpoint on our list that is located outside the old town. From here you can capture a postcard perfect photo. The restaurant is predominantly frequented by tourists, but that is the case almost everywhere in the old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The small menu features <strong>creative fusion dishes<\/strong> \u2013 with everything from vegan and vegetarian to fish and meat. Important to know: if you are searching for classic Italian cuisine, you\u2019re in the wrong place. Yet its historic old town is pleasantly compact.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In case you are wondering about the similarities in the names: The city of Monopoli has nothing to do with the famous <strong>game Monopoly<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monopoli is a beautiful port town with its whitewashed houses making it the perfect photo opportunity. The <strong>relaxing flair<\/strong> here really appealed to us. It is certainly not nearly as busy as in Polignano a Mare.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We recommend allowing about <strong>2 to 3 hours<\/strong> for you to explore Monopoli.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We <strong>parked<\/strong> very close to the city at the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. The church originates in the 12<sup>th<\/sup> Century and was rebuilt into a baroque work in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> Century. The church interior leaves a very special impression due to its marble columns. At the northern end of the old town you soon come to <strong>Castello Carlo V<\/strong>, originating in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century. There are several <strong>small fishing boats<\/strong> are anchored here in front of the picturesque backdrop of the old town. Overall, great value for money.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Terrazza Don Ferrante:&nbsp;<\/strong>This restaurant is located on the rooftop of a 5-star boutique hotel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/it\/dimora-don-ferrante.en.html?aid=874507\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Don Ferrante<\/a>, and is also open to external guests \u2013 be it for lunch or simply an afternoon coffee with a view. San Vito<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>San Vito is a little different because you won\u2019t find a city here, \u201cjust\u201d a beach town \u2013 and a rather special one at that. A mighty, <strong>historic abbey<\/strong> (Abbazia di San Vito) is enthroned here and makes for a really <strong>special photo opportunity<\/strong>. The abbey is <strong>privately owned<\/strong> and therefore unfortunately cannot be visited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As special as the backdrop is, the beach is not amazing in our eyes. Truth be told, we didn\u2019t find the water that inviting on account of the rubbish. Therefore, we would tend not to recommend San Vito for a beach day. In case you get hungry: a <strong>few restaurants<\/strong> are nestled around from the beach \u2013 some are almost right on the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>San Vito is located just a ten-minute drive north of Polignano a Mare. Homebase: Where to Stay for the Day Trip?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We chose the small town of Putignano as our homebase in this part of Puglia. From there we not only visited Polignano, Monopoli and San Vito, but also explored Bari a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our choice fell on the wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/it\/dimora-clementina.en.html?aid=874507\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Dimora Clementina<\/a> \u2013 a really fantastic place to say, which we can warmly recommend to you. The <strong>design and furnishing<\/strong> are really to the highest degree. We felt incredibly comfortable there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One highlight is the fantastic breakfast, which was prepared daily with a lot of love by the lovely owner.
